KNIT UP YOUR OWN STASH
Creative ways to use up your stash.


This workshop is designed to give you some ideas about how to use up your yarn stash. During the workshop you will plan out and begin to knit up a number of swatches that will be joined together to create a cushion-cover. You can choose from a selection of patterns from Debbie’s Blanket & Throws books or you could try designing your own patterns. Advice will be given on:

• mixing different weights of yarn together
• colour combinations
• mixing different fibres together
• stitches that can be combined together in the same design

Materials that you will need to bring with you:
– a mixture of yarns from your stash
– a selection of needle sizes that are suitable for the weights of yarn that you have selected to bring with you
– scissors
– pencil, eraser, coloured pencils (optional)
– ruler
– cable needle (if cabling)
– fine sewing needle and thread (if beading).

TACKLING FAIR ISLE, INTARSIA & BEADS

This course is suitable for knitters who can already knit and follow a basic knitting pattern. Working on a small bag project using Rowan Glace Cotton, you will be shown the following techniques:

• how to read a knitted chart
• how to strand yarns across the wrong side of the work (fair isle)
• how to keep the tension even and the knitting flat
• how to weave in yarns on the wrong side of the work (fair isle)
• how to join in new colours (intarsia)
• how to avoid holes between colour changes (intarsia)
• how to knit in beads using the slip stitch technique

Materials that you need to bring with you:
– knitting needles: 2,75mm (no.12) & 3.00mm (no.11)
– scissors
– fine sewing needle
– sewing thread
– hi-lighter pen

25 BEADED KNITS
A workshop inspired by Debbie’s fifth title.


This course is suitable for knitters who can already knit and purl and want to have a go at knitting with beads. Everyone will begin the workshop by working on a given sample to practise a few special beading techniques. You will either choose a project from the book to start knitting (you will have to purchase your own yarn and beads for this), or you will knit up some more sample swatches from the book of your own choosing (yarn and beads will be provided for swatches). The following techniques will be covered:

• how to thread beads easily onto your yarn
• how to read a beaded pattern
• how to knit with beads using the slip-stitch method on right side and wrong side rows
• designing your own beaded pattern

Materials that you will need to bring with you:
– sewing thread
– fine sewing needle
– knitting needles (a selection including 3.00mm, 3.25mm, 3.75mm and 4.00mm)
– paper and pencil (to make any notes)
– eraser
– Proportional knitting graph paper will be provided if you want to design your own swatch.

This course is suitable for knitters who can already knit and follow a basic knitting pattern but want to design their own knitted garments or accessories. In this workshop you will be guided through the process of how to create a knitted swatch using your own source of inspiration. The following techniques will be covered:

• creating motifs, patterns and textured stitches from your inspiration
• how to choose a colour palette
• understanding scale
• how to create pattern repeats and how to make them fit
• choosing the most suitable yarn for your project
• getting the fabric quality right
• how to measure tension accurately
• how to convert measurement into stitches and rows

Materials that you will need to bring with you:
– a source of inspiration (it can be anything that you like!)
– a selection of knitting needles (the size of knitting needles that you use will be determined by the yarn that you choose for your project)
– ruler
– coloured pens or pencils
– paper and pencil
– eraser

This course is suitable for knitters who can already knit and follow a basic knitting pattern but want to design their own knitted garments or accessories. In this workshop you will be guided through the process of how to make your own spec drawing and graph up your design so that it is ready toknit. The following techniques will be covered:

• how to make a spec drawing
• where to get the measurements from for your design
• how to convert measurement into stitches and rows
• making the maths work
• how to transfer your design onto graph paper
• how to work out how much yarn you will need for your design
• writing up your own knitting pattern

– a knitted swatch in the yarn and pattern that you want your design to be in
– calculator

A PROFESSIONAL FINISH 1
Tips to successful knitting and finishing (a one-day workshop)

This workshop is suitable for knitters who have knitted and finished garments before, but want to improve their skills.

This workshop will give you the chance to learn how to professionally knit and finish your garments. Before the day of the workshop you will be asked to knit up the panels for a miniature garment using DK weight yarn. You will be sent a pattern for the back, front and two sleeves. You must bring the knitted panels with you to the workshop.

On the day of the workshop we will talk through the pattern instructions and any queries about the pattern can be answered. We will then assemble the garment.


The finishing techniques that we will cover include:

• blocking and pressing
• joining the shoulders by casting off the stitches together
• picking up stitches around the neck
• sewing in a drop-shoulder sleeve
• sewing the knitted panels together using mattress stitch
• sewing in the ends

Materials that you need to bring with you:
– knitting needles: 3.25mm (no.10), 4.00mm (no.8) and 4.50mm (no.7)
– sewing-up needle
– scissors
– pins
– paper and pencil
– the pattern instructions that you have been sent

This workshop is suitable for knitters who have knitted and finished garments before, but want to improve their skills.

It will give you the chance to learn more techniques to help you professionally knit and finish your garments. You will be asked to do a small amount of preparation before you come to the workshop.The finishing techniques that we will cover include:


• Methods of casting on:

• Methods of decreasing (fully fashioning)
• Shaping shoulders using short-row-shaping
• How to knit a neat two-row buttonhole
• Knitting and sewing down button/buttonhole bands

MORE BLANKETS & THROWS
A workshop inspired by Debbie Abraham’s third book

More Blankets and throws To Knit offers 12 individual projects using Rowan yarns. Textured stitches, multi-colour designs, stripe patterns, beads, sequins and buttons are used to create unique furnishings for the home. You can follow the instructions for a set project, or have fun experimenting with your own combination of a selection of squares, there are 100 individual squares in the book to choose from.

This workshop will enable you to learn a brand new knitting technique, or brush up on your existing skills. You will choose a square to knit up during the workshop from More Blankets & throws. Choose from textured stitches, cables, intarsia and fair isle patterns, sequins and beads.

You will be shown how your knitted square can be developed into a small bag, with advice given on construction and finishing. You will be using Rowan yarns in a DK weight to knit up your square.
